The Draw: With the Ranger, Tacoma, and Dakota in its sights, this generation Nissan Frontier started moving into Canadian driveways for 1998 offering several body styles, engines, and transmissions -- as well as two- or four-wheel drive. Selection, thusly, was huge, and owners loved the availability of a supercharged V6 engine, too. Capability, styling, off-road confidence, and a sense of “anytime, anywhere” adventurousness were also loved by owners. Owners describing their Nissan Frontiers online frequently used words like “excellent” and “dependable.”

The Common Issues: On a test drive, ensure the brakes operate as expected and that they aren’t worn down. Also, be sure to listen to the suspension for any signs of heavy metallic clunking, grinding or popping sounds from beneath the truck. These could indicate worn bushings, ball joints or shock absorbers. Be sure all interior accessories are working, and ensure you’re able to shift in and out of four-wheel drive modes as outlined in the owner’s manual with no undue fuss. A rattling noise from the supercharger may be normal, caused by activation of a “low power” mode when the truck isn’t filled with premium gas. Ask a mechanic to be sure that’s the case.

Check the underbody extensively for any signs of excessive rust, heavy dents, punctures or holes. Should any of the above be noted, the vehicle may have been abused or damaged in an off-road situation. Grass, dirt, and turf hanging out of the suspension or frame are other warning signs. Otherwise, this machine looks pleasantly free of worrisome issues.
