The Draw: Capability, power, selection, and a proven reputation helped attract shoppers to the last-generation Sierra and Silverado models from GM. Look for a slew of options from a simple V6-powered work truck to a 400-horsepower, high-luxury, family-hauling towing rig. OnStar adds confidence on long-distance travels, and a late-cycle refresh increased fuel economy with new gear ratios, engine tuning and 6-speed transmissions.
The Common Issues: Check all on-board electronics, the climate control system, the 4x4 system and all information and entertainment-related electronics for proper operation -- ditto for all windows and the sunroof, and sliding tailgate glass, if equipped. Models with the 5.3L engine with AFM cylinder deactivation may suffer from burning excessive oil, an issue that’s well-documented. If the truck you’re considering has this engine, be sure to opt for a later model and protect yourself with GM’s lengthy powertrain warranty. The available 4.8L V8, and the up-level 6.2L V8, didn’t suffer from this issue. In any case, ensure the model you’re considering was treated to frequent, on time oil changes. Finally, confirm proper operation of the cruise control and avoid a used model with extensive modifications.
