Chrysler is quickly gearing up to introduce more environmentally friendly "clean diesel" technology starting this year on select vehicles.

6.7-liter Cummins turbo-diesel engine
The highly anticipated new Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD will arrive in March, while the Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks will come available with a 6.7 litre Cummins engine. After 2009, even Dodges light duty trucks will be available with diesel power.

The Dodge Sprinter, a large transport van, is currently on sale with a diesel powerplant as well.

Next generation diesel engines boast a great deal more low-end torque than gasoline powered mills, while sucking back up to 30 percent less fuel.

Buyers who work their vehicles hard tend to prefer diesel for its ability to tow a heavy load without so much of a penalty on performance and mileage- as well as generally lower maintenance costs.

Over 80 percent of Dodges heavy duty truck customers choose the diesel option. Total sales in this segment are growing, so it's good to hear that the new engines also produce 20 percent less carbon dioxide too.

"The evolution of clean diesel technology represents a tremendous value and environmental opportunity for Canadian drivers by improving fuel economy and achieving low emissions levels," says Reid Bigland, President and CEO of DaimlerChrysler.

The carmaker is also exploring more efficient gasoline engines, hybrids, flex-fuel vehicles and biodiesel capability as a part of its Advanced Propulsion Technology program.
