Why for carpeting?

We get tonnes of questions on a daily basis here at Auto123.com. We answer 99% of them but never make the answers “public”. This question from an old friend was so off the wall that I though I'd share it with y'all.

Ciao Matt!

How goes? There's this question that has been on my husband's mind and he couldn't find the answer online... maybe you would know the answer to it. Here's his question:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've always wondered why car companies still continue to produce vehicles with interior carpeting, as if designing for a world where precipitation doesn't exist.

The public transport sector has obviously understood the benefits of more pragmatic flooring. Why isn't this the case with automobiles?

Am I missing something here, or is this yet another example of horseless carriage thinking within the automotive industry?

Anyway, that was my question. Any answer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hey Nancy! I don't know that I have the exact answer nor do I think that a real answer exists but here's my take on it.

Car manufacturers, those that tell us what we want based on what we tell them we want, make cars based on emotions, impressions, luxury and comfort, regardless of whether you are spending $20k or $120k. In the past, vinyl interiors or even plain steel floors were not so uncommon. As time went by, plush carpeting became a luxury item much like power windows and door locks. Consumers not wanting to get something that looks and feels cheap preferred to get carpets wet and dirty over plain rubber flooring but at least had something nice.

I don't know if this answers the question but this situation is much like any other where we get/buy/have things we don't need but can't do without.

So there's my answer. Does it make sense to any of you? Anyone have an alternate answer?
