With a dramatic and futuristic looking silhouette, and a distinctive glass rear-hatch, the Volvo C30 is sure to cause a stir when unveiled to the public at the Paris Motor Show in September. Production is scheduled to begin at the end of 2006.
The car is intended to appeal to a younger generation than typical for the carmaker. Targeted sales volume is some 65,000 units per year, with about 75 percent being sold in Europe.
Various styling cues are intended to ensure that the C30 sticks out and gets recognized. With unique tail lamps, a low, wide grille, and a spoiler perched atop the hatch to help accomplish this goal, the overall shape to the C30 conveys a sense of speed.
The interior has room for four adults in four separate seats. The rear seats are slightly pulled to the center, allowing more room and a very interesting view of the centre console through the rear glass.
"The C30 is about "customized functionality" says HÃ¥kan Abrahamsson, who heads the C30 project. Even the base model offers upholstery in three colors, for instance. It also comes with a high-class audio system, though buyers can specify a 10-speaker amplified unit from Dynaudio.
The selection carries on under the hood. A variety of engines, ranging from a 1.6 litre 100 horsepower unit to a turbo-five with 220 horsepower, are available, as is a diesel engine.
First class safety features round out the curious looking C30 as a true Volvo. It is available with the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), among other unique and cutting edge features.
With fast looks, safety and performance served to order, the C30 will become instrumental in helping the company achieve its 600,000 unit per year goal.
