For 2023, the Toyota Highlander trades in its indestructible V6 engine for a 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder good for 265 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque in non-electrified trims.

The hybrid option is still on the table, of course, but we'll have to keep a close eye on the effects of the “cablegate” mini-scandal affecting the Japanese brand; For the moment, that has affected only the RAV4 hybrid and its plug-in hybrid Prime variant, but the technology that is shared between several hybrid models could very well cause further headaches for Toyota Canada. Stay tuned.

That said, we still feel that Toyota's hybrids are highly recommendable, and that includes the Highlander’s electrified option.

The ball is now in Toyota Canada's court to fix that corrosion-related defect in certain components.
