Mazda will be running the Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship for the fourth time in its history, taking on luxury automakers like Aston Martin, Porsche, Lotus and BMW with the light, high-performance MX-5 GT.

The car has been tweaked by Jota Sport, the team that will be using it for the 2011 season, and undergone a strict weight-loss regimen: the cabin has been purged of superfluous elements, each part that could be made lighter has been and the body has been dipped in acid. The colossal effort has resulted in a slim, trim, 850-kg car.

The MX-5 GT features several FIA-approved pieces of equipment, including a roll bar, race seats, an external electric cut-off, safety catches on the hood and trunk, a competition steering wheel and alloy wheels.

The running gear, rear axle, six-speed sequential transmission with paddles and engine have all been modified to enhance performance, translating into 275 ponies waiting to be unleashed.

New carbon doors and polycarbonate windows have also been added. This little beast can rocket from 0 to 100 km/h in three seconds, en route to top speeds of approximately 257 km/h.

The Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship consists of 9 events held between March and November, including a stop at Spa-Francorchamps. The most popular roadster in the world will be tearing up the track in the season opener at Silverstone on March 26, a three-hour endurance race.
