One of the concepts is based on the Crosstrek

•    Subaru has previewed two concepts it is bringing to the 2023 Tokyo Auto Show.

•    One of the concepts is the Crosstrek Boost Gear, based on, that’s right, the Crosstrek.

•    The models feature add-ons designed to make them more off-road-capable.

Subaru is bringing two off-road-focused concepts to the upcoming Tokyo Auto Show, and it has just previewed them to help send off the old year, or ring in the new one. Take your pick.

In a reinforced nutshell, the two design studies are given the Boost Gear moniker and receive a number of add-ons to make them more capable off of paved roads, or in the absence of any roads at all.

The image of the Crosstrek Boost Gear hints at that a higher stance off the ground than the regular Crosstrek, and there’s additional trim at the front and on the doors, plus a two-tone paint job - which should really increase the model’s offroad chops. Up top sits a special roof rack with LED light bar and even an awning, and the car sits on mud-terrain tires behind which hang blue mud flaps.

The other model is a spinoff of the Japanese-market Subaru Rex, and it’s also blessed with the two-tone finish. It features the special tires and mud flaps, but not the cladding on the wheel arches or the roof rail, tough luck for it.

No word at the moment on whether these are strictly design studies or meant to preview an options package of the future, or perhaps a new trim level à la Wilderness. We’ll learn more when the models are presented in Tokyo next month (January 13 to be exact).
