Bernhard Maier, Porsche’s head of sales and marketing, announced that the manufacturer is currently evaluating the viability of introducing diesel versions of the Cayenne and Panamera in North America.
It seems that the demand for fuel-efficient vehicles is growing increasingly insistent in the luxury segment, pushing the German automaker to consider offering diesel engines in the United States, Porsche’s biggest market in terms of sales.
Europeans have already been driving diesel Cayennes since 2009, as well as a hybrid version recently made available in North America. According to Maier, the two models are responsible for 30% of the SUV’s global sales, and their market share should increase in the coming years.
And according to Automotive News, hybrid and diesel powertrains for the Panamera will be available in Europe by the summer and may well be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.
A final decision concerning the coming of diesel engines in North America should be made shortly.
