Crossing the globe in 80 days without using fossil fuels is the challenge up to 30 teams will face in 2017, Wired reports. They will start and end their 40,000km trip in Paris.

Of course, this is inspired by Jules Vernes' Around the World in 80 Days, published in 1873. Race co-founders Franck Manders and Hubert Auriol insist that no combustion engines will be allowed, meaning teams will have to rely on alternative energies such as hydrogen, electricity, or solar power.

Details about the epic race are limited at this point, but according to France's Le Figaro newspaper, it will be split into eight 5,000km stages. A press conference will be held in Paris in March.

“Only one thing's for sure: The environment will be the focal point of this race, by far eclipsing performance and speed,” said Auriol.
