Study could be a foretaste of future Outlander PHEV design direction

Mitsubishi has teased a first image of an SUV concept that it will be bringing to the 2019 Geneva Motor Show on March 5th. The Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer is named after the Swiss Alpine resort, and for the moment it is mainly a design study, one that may in fact show the way forward for a model like the Outlander PHEV. That SUV has been successful for the automaker in several markets - nowhere more so than Canada - and will be a significant part of the company’s strategy going forward.

“… (the study will) bring further developments in SUV styling and practicality, along with a focus on next-generation technology and enhanced EV performance.”

The single full frontal image of the Engelberg Tourer is dominated by a large front grille, which is seemingly de rigueur in car design circles these days. Here it is flanked by slim headlights and C-shaped lighting units. The vehicle features a skid plate in the front as well, while the hood is clean and without protuberances or extra edges.

As we’ve seen with a number of recent design studies, the side mirrors of the vehicle are switched out in favour of cameras. On top, a roof rack features LED lighting at each end.

We can expect to see more teaser images pop up of various body parts of the Engelberg Tourer over the course of February to puff up interest as much as possible ahead of the big reveal in Geneva. Stay tuned.
