Using radar technology, PARKTRONIC with Parking Assist debuted on S-Class vehicles, and is now available on the E-Class Coupe. The first thing it does is help you find a parking space.

Using radar technology, PARKTRONIC with Parking Assist debuted on S-Class vehicles.

Sideways-inclined sensors on the front bumper record the length of a parking space as you drive by it (at speeds up to 35 km/h). If it’s a big enough space, a green light is signaled on the display, which is mounted on top of the dash, directly below the rear view.

At that point, if you want help to get into that spot, simply press the “Park Assist” button on the dash. After reverse gear has been engaged, instructions for safe parking appear on the display in the instrument cluster. This is not an “automatic parking” system, that other automakers offer.

“It’s a much simpler system,” said Chris Goczan, Manager of Product Planning, Mercedes-Benz Canada. “Research has revealed that customers don’t use those systems, because they find them too complicated and difficult to work… people are frustrated with them. Our approach was to simplify the experience.”
