The 2012 Civic was mercilessly criticized since its launch, and so it looks like Honda's been forced back to the drawing board with its popular compact model.

John Mendel, American Honda executive vice president, confirmed that the Civic will be revamped for 2013 – one year earlier than originally planned.

However, it’s hard to judge the extent of changes we'll see on the 2013 Civic at this point.

Mendel agreed a change was in need:“We take feedback seriously, regardless who it’s from, and we will act accordingly quickly.”

The Honda Civic is still at the top of the sales charts in Canada, but is up against ever fiercer competition from the likes of the Hyundai Elantra. The Elantra may even manage to outstrip the Civic before the end of 2011, something that hasn’t happened in quite a while.

As of September, 37,774 Civics went to new homes, compared to 42,796 last year.Meanwhile, Hyundai sold 36,652 Elantras, up from just 12,606 in 2010.
