On the heels of Ford, which has already outfitted the Ford Explorer with inflatable seat-belts, Mercedes is now also equipping its own vehicles with beltbags. Significantly reducing the risk of serious injury, these new seat-belts will better distribute the pressure on a passenger’s ribcage in the event of a head-on collision.

“Mercedes-Benz is pursuing its safety initiative for backseat passengers with the Beltbags,” says Rodolfo Schöneburg Head of Passive Safety and Vehicle Functions. “After all, the excellent standard of safety offered by Mercedes-Benz doesn’t just apply to all model series, but to all seats, too.”

The automaker is not planning to introduce inflatable seat-belts for first-row occupants since airbags are already present in the front, and not for passengers seated in the back.
