When manufacturers step forward to take on certain segments or even specific models, they often make lofty, high-and-mighty promises and stipulations: “Why, yes, of course we’ll give it 1,200 more horsepower than its rival, and the seats will be made of unicorn hide, and the steering wheel rubies and sapphires…”

Well, Nissan’s not harming any mythical creatures nor will it blind drivers with blinged out steering wheels, but what they are doing is launching a vehicle that rivals even its own luxury division (Infiniti) with interior amenities and exterior design features that are sure to make the average luxury consumer stop and take note.

I recently had the opportunity to take the latest 4-door sports car from Nissan for a spin in the rolling hills surrounding Nashville. As the greenery flashed by the double paned, soundproof windows, I was struck by how plush, comfortable and luxurious the Maxima truly was.

So, speaking of that interior coddling, the 2016 Nissan Maxima is dressed to the nines with all you’d expect from a manufacturer with much more prestige. With available diamond-quilted seat inserts, as well as Alcantara on the steering wheel…

Wait: Let’s take a moment to discuss that steering wheel a bit more. First of all, kudos to Nissan for fixing their “hit a random button every time you turn the wheel” issue that has plagued them for a few years now. This brand new wheel isn’t only stunning to behold, but it’s also comfortable and functional. Add a little flat-bottom styling to the mix and this is a steering wheel even the most discerning luxury-car lover will enjoy seeing every single day.

Then there are the wood and/or brushed chrome inserts that line the dash and door panels. The design engineers at Nissan in Japan wanted to give theses inserts play and character, so they added a diamond detailing that makes light play off the surface in a way that gives the interior of the 2016 Nissan Maxima a sophisticated yet playful feel.

And all that stitching? It’s real.

The good folks at Nissan made sure the new Maxima offers up real luxury, not surface only, and it shows.

Now, speaking of surface, the exterior design of the brand new 2016 Nissan Maxima definitely sets it apart as being something more upscale. From the signature lobster-claw headlights to the floating roofline, the Maxima is a head-turner (in the right ways).

Nissan’s made bold statements saying it will take on the likes of Audi, BMW and Acura with the new Maxima. At first, it’s easy to scoff at their lofty goals, especially when they already have an entire luxury line to rival said brands. However, once you set foot in the 2016 Nissan Maxima, I’ll bet you change your mind and nod your head in approval at Nissan’s market strategy.
