Honda Aero announced that Burlington, North Carolina would become home to its corporate headquarters and a high-tech jet engine manufacturing plant. The new facility will produce advanced jet engines developed and marketed by GE Honda Aero Engines, LLC.

As the name suggests, it's a joint venture between GE and Honda Aero. The venture goes back to 2004 when it was established for the development, certification and commercialization of jet engines in the 1,000- to 3,500-pound thrust class.

The facility will total 102,400 square feet, with about 36,000 reserved for office space, a 58,400-square-foot production plant and an 8,000-square-foot engine test cell. The $27-million facility will employ about 70 people when it reaches its initial production plan of 200 engines per year.

Production of the new plant is scheduled to start in late 2010, and when completed, a new, advanced GE Honda HF120 turbofan engine will be built there.

"This is a major step forward for our company, as we move to establish the home of our jet engine manufacturing operations here in Burlington," said Fumitaka Hasegawa, president and CEO of Honda Aero, Inc.
