DaimlerChrysler Canada is looking to expand and improve its lineup of clean diesel technologies starting in the 2007 model year. The automaker will now be able to offer new or improved versions of its diesel-powered vehicles. The new diesel engines will boast a significant increase in low-end torque, a 30 percent average increase in fuel economy and a 20 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared to gasoline engines. When towing, the diesel engines can reduce the fuel consumption by up to 40 percent.

The first Bluetec model to be offered by Chrysler will be the Dodge Ram Heavy Duty with a 6.7L turbodiesel Cummins engine. It will go on sale next spring. This powertrain already meets the low emission standards that will be effective in all 50 U.S. states by 2010. It also uses a self-cleaning particle filter and a catalyst that reduces nitrogen by 90 percent. Incidentally, the Dodge Ram Heavy Duty with turbodiesel Cummins engine is the cleanest pickup on the market. It's a big truck, but a green one.
