According to Automotive News, Fiat Chrysler is secretly developing a 2.2L turbo-diesel engine for the Chrysler 200 in an effort to rival the Volkswagen Passat TDI.

A member at Allpar.com successfully logged into the DealerConnect secured website (which Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge dealers use to get all the information on their models) and discovered a brand new configuration for the 2015 Chrysler 200.

Reports indicate a 2.2L 16-valve DeTomaso engine, and of course there's no such thing in Fiat Chrysler's portfolio right now. However, we know that Alfa Romeo is working on a 2.2L turbo-diesel unit ranging from 135-210 horsepower; could the Italian firm share this mill with the Chrysler 200? It's all a mystery.

If it does turn out to be true, the American manufacturer will have a weapon to threaten Volkswagen in the midsize segment. FYI, sales of the Passat TDI in the U.S. are not that great.

Automotive News spoke with Eric Mayne, who's responsible for powertrains at Fiat Chrysler, and he quickly denied that such an engine exists.

What do you think? Care to make a bet?
