Topless fun in the sun

Pros: All the nostalgic fun of driving a Beetle with the option to drop the top and cruise in the open air and sunshine.

Cons: Thanks to the convertible drop-top, a massive portion of the trunk and what makes the Beetle so practical as a hatch is lost.

2015 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible Price and Fuel Economy: The 2015 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible is available in three trim levels and the pricing is as follows:

  • 2015 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible Trendline+ $26,850
  • 2015 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible Comfortline $30,550
  • 2015 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible Sportline $35,575

The choice between a 6-speed manual, DSG automatic transmission or regular 6-speed automatic will influence pricing, as well.

As for fuel economy, the 2015 VW Beetle features two different engines and a few different transmissions, but the average city fuel economy is in the 10L/100km range, and the highway will see you in the 7-8L/100km range.

Powertrain: As mentioned, the 2015 Volkswagen Beetle convertible is offered with two engine choices: a 1.8L in-line 4-cylinder that produces 170 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque or a 2.0L TSI turbocharged in-line 4-cylinder mill that’s good for 210 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque.

Only the Sportline version of the 2015 VW Beetle Convertible is available with the 2.0L turbocharged mill mated to the absolutely fabulous DSG transmission.

Changes and Improvements: No major changes or improvements were made to the 2015 version of the Volkswagen Beetle Convertible.

Cargo Capacity: As the convertible soft top has to sit somewhere, it eats into a bit of the trunk space in the Beetle Convertible. While the hatch version offers up approximately 436L of cargo space, the convertible version loses more than half that and only has 201L (roughly). Packing will become more strategic. However, the 2015 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible does have room for four.

Safety: The 2015 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible is equipped with all manner of standard safety equipment and airbags, as well as ABS, electronic brake-pressure distribution, hill hold assist, and ESC.

Comparing the 2015 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible: MINI Cooper Cabriolet, Fiat 500 Cabriolet, Ford Mustang Convertible.
