Reasonably priced until you option it up
The 2012 Chevrolet Traverse starts at $35,910 before taxes as well as freight and delivery charges. This 2LT AWD tester isn’t the priciest model available (that would be the LTZ), but still rings in at $46,125. Add a few options, such as the useless side steps ($840), the dual-pane sunroof ($1,685), a tow package ($550) and the DVD entertainment system ($2,255), and the total climbs to $51,455.
In comparison, a similarly equipped Ford Explorer XLT 4WD lists for $45k, while a Dodge Durango Crew Plus goes for just under $50k.
The 2012 Chevrolet Traverse feels solid and is totally enjoyable on the road. It’s got plenty of guts and handles decently, while its interior volume is matched only by its Buick and GMC cousins. It also benefits from a good warranty. I believe an overhaul is due for the 2013 model year, and if GM can concentrate on improving the quality of the cockpit while figuring out a way the keep the price and the vehicle’s weight down, they’ll have quite a contender.
Right now, the Traverse may not be our favourite midsize SUV or crossover or whatever you want to call it, but ever since it was introduced, it has been a recommendable choice.
