Stylish and charming
And yes, the rear seats are just as comfortable, if a little less spacious. The problem is getting to them. Though the long, sloping roof is undeniably attractive, it does complicate things somewhat for taller passengers. If access is problematic for them, so too is spending time in the back, as heads unfortunately tend to bump against the roof.

Like a sports car
What makes the CC so distinct, other than its four-door coupe glamour, is of course its driving dynamics. Our friends at Volkswagen managed to retain all the charm of the German driving experience in what, when it’s all said and done, is a very large sedan. Of course, a long wheelbase promotes comfort, but it often represents a handicap where handling is concerned.

Not such a problem here, though. The precise steering turns our vague dynamic impulses into a rewarding experience. Of course, my tester’s 2.0-litre, 200-hp, turbocharged mill is both lively and smooth, but these qualities only truly come out when it powers a sporty little number like the GTI.

Under the CC’s hood it gets the job done but it’s not at the height of its powers. The weight of the car is partly responsible, especially when four good-sized adults are inside.

But the driving dynamics, the way it maintains its trajectory and responds to the slightest whims of the driver and the gearbox, whose precision is legendary, make for an incredibly gratifying drive.

Conclusion
The CC is stylish and charming and boasts a fairly accomplished engine (although you’ll have to opt for the 280-hp V6 if you’re looking for more grunt). The suspension provides a savvy mix of comfort and vivacity, and the steering system is beyond reproach. You rarely see these qualities with such assertiveness in this class.

I must admit that I’m seriously torn, though. At nearly $50,000, even with all this goodness, is the CC really worth it? Absolutely, if you’re a fan of German engineering and are looking for a uniquely styled model. But if you’re just in it for driving enjoyment, I have to say that there are a lot of cheaper rivals out there than can give the CC a run for its money.

Too bad, because this is one great car.
