Fuel consumption is what you’d imagine from a 500-horse SUV. We registered a decent average of 10.9 L/100 km during a 1000-km road trip, but you’ll get a much higher result than that when cruising downtown. Don’t expect the start/stop system to save much fuel, as it only activates when several conditions are met, which rarely happens.

Despite the trick suspension, maximum towing capacity is rated at 7,716 pounds or 3,500 kilograms. You must choose the $750 Trailer tow package, however, but that’s pocket change.

The Cayenne’s cockpit, whose fit and finish is obviously beyond reproach, is sprinkled with aluminum trim, chrome ledges on virtually every button as well as velvety leather and Alcantara upholstery. The slanted centre console, a design Porsche introduced in the Panamera, keeps many functions within easy reach. Every switch feels and operates like it will last 100 years.

There is plenty of room in the Cayenne for four adults, but the rear outboard seat cushions are sculpted for added support. As a result, the center passenger might suffer a little comfort-wise.

Our tester’s optional 16-speaker, Burmester surround sound system—priced at a mere $4,560, thank you—offers excellent sound quality. Porsche cleverly placed an LCD screen in one of the five instrument pods facing the driver, which conveniently displays the navigation map as well as sound system or trip computer information.

Cargo space, however, is not the Cayenne’s forte. With a capacity of 671 litres with the rear seat upright and 1,781 litres when it’s folded down, there’s slightly more available room than in the BMW X5. But you’ll find more space in the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, the Range Rover Sport and way more in the admittedly bigger Audi Q7.
