Your family snow plow
Subaru has showered its occupants with gifts, with excellent visibility ensured as much by the abundance of glass as the height of the car. And even if the Outback’s profile borders on SUV styling, the driving position and comfort level are pure wagon.

Comforting reliability
The engineers didn’t see fit to complicate things engine-wise, as the very reliable 2.5-litre flat-4 Boxer is along for the ride again in 2010. Generating 170 hp, it proves thoroughly sufficient for day-to-day driving.

I love this engine for its efficiency and proven reliability. The 170 ft-lb of torque enable an honest effort, though don’t expect to tow a trailer without feeling the engine strain a little.

I have to admit that I had serious doubts about the application of a CVT transmission on this kind of car. I quickly changed my tune, however – it does an absolutely remarkable job. Well calibrated, it provides linear and effortless shifting of all six gears (in manual mode).

Generating 170 hp, it proves thoroughly sufficient for day-to-day driving.

Limitations
The suspension system was calibrated to balance the Outback’s off- and on-road capabilities, which results in a certain stiffness that’s more or less enjoyable. Whether you’re on the road or not, you feel every single thing that passes underneath the wheels. The interior could have been better soundproofed, as engine and tire noise infiltrate the cabin.

Though the Outback is decidedly designed to hit the trails, I wouldn’t venture too far off into the woods. The high ground clearance gets the job done, but it isn’t enough to make this a true off-roader. The all-wheel drive seems eminently more reassuring and practical in winter conditions than off the beaten track.

The Outback, a family assistant
Subaru remains true to the idea of creating a very practical vehicle for active families who don’t want to compromise. Without going so far as to say that it’s possibly the perfect vehicle for motorists here in Quebec, the Outback should absolutely be on your list. Not only is it fun to drive, this is a car that will do many a favour for its owner.
