Stylish + Economical = smart
As I start the engine and drive it for the first time I am not impressed. If you leave it fully automatic, the shifts are still a little messy. I wouldn’t describe it as ‘clunky’ so it's an improvement for sure, but I would not enjoy driving this every day. I found the best way to get a smooth ride is to get the revs high and do the shifting yourself.

The fortwo has always been known for its fuel efficiency. It has a lightweight body that gives an impressive power to weight ratio. Its fuel consumption went up when they made the switch from diesel to gas and is now rated at 5.9 L/100km in the city and 4.9 litres on the highway.

The smart is classed as an ultra-low emissions vehicle, in fact, it is rated the lowest in its class emitting only 130g of CO2 per kilometre.

No doubt this car is happiest in the city. With its short turning radius and small size, you can get around easier than just about any other car on the road. I had it on the highway only for a short while, and was surprised with how comfortable it felt at 110km/hour.

This Highstyle edition costs about $21,450 while a base model smart starts at under $15,000.

Companies in North America are starting to see the need for small, economical cars.

You can get a CR-Z hybrid for just over $23,000, but it doesn’t get the same fuel mileage. Scion has come to Canada and will be introducing the IQ in 2011 and rumour has it that it will be able to compete with mileage on the smart and give you more space.

If you don’t really spend a lot of time in your vehicle, don’t need extra space and are incredibly conscious about your carbon foot print – this unique little car is worth checking out.
