As the world’s most famous affordable roadster, the Mazda MX-5’s consistent recipe for cheap thrills and top-notch driving dynamics have catapulted it into sales superstardom.

A recent makeover carries on into the 2010 model year, and sees the MX-5 looking more serious and aggressive than ever before. The new wheels, lights and fascia bring Mazda’s new styling language to their smallest car-- though it still remains instantly MX-5 from every angle. Both cloth and hardtop retractable roof mechanisms are available.

Power in all models comes from a 2-litre, 167 horsepower four-cylinder engine with 140 lb.-ft of torque. For true sports car handling, the MX-5 is a rear-drive vehicle. It offers manual transmissions with both five and six speeds, as well as a six-speed automatic with paddle shift (158 hp). In addition to moving the lightweight roadster along with authority, the four-cylinder engine also turns in exceptional mileage.

Inside, available heated leather and Bose sound dial up a premium roof-down experience for two. Controls for the climate control and audio systems are simple and easy to use, and the steering wheel houses controls for the stereo and cruise control, too. Look for premium trim materials and a relatively generous level of at-hand storage for smaller items. As an added bonus, the MX-5’s trunk space remains the same regardless of the position of the roof.

Of course, all the fun doesn’t mean taking a hit in the safety department. Driver, passenger and side airbags are standard on all MX-5 models, and traction and stability control are available.

The 2010 Mazda MX-5 is on sale now, from $28,995.
