Cadillac Urban Luxury Concept: luxury in a small size!

Cadillac explores new grounds with the Urban Luxury Concept (ULC). This tiny vehicle was shown to a small crowd of journalists on Wednesday evening at GM’s North Hollywood Advanced Design Center (NHADC), an institution celebrating its tenth anniversary.

The ULC is a hatchback conceived for urban dwellers that live with tight, confined parking areas for apartments, office buildings and suburban homes. Designed at NHADC, it demonstrates that luxury is not tied to size only.

And that’s because the ULC is small. It is smaller than a Chevrolet Aveo5. The wheelbase is 2,467 mm and overall length only 3,835 mm, while the Aveo5 has a wheelbase of 2 480 mm and overall length of 3 920 mm. The interior room is bolstered by a wide stance of 1,730 mm (1680 mm for the Aveo5), but maybe not by the height of 1,446 mm (1505 mm for the Aveo5). Elegant 19-inch wheels pushed to the edges of the body create a design with almost no overhangs.

It seats four!
This miniature Caddy seats four, with easy access to all seats available via a pair of scissor-type doors that extend outward and rotate forward at the push of a button, in a seamless, elegant motion. A large aperture allows for effortless entry and exit– particularly in tight city parking spaces.

The roomy passenger area is trimmed in exquisite materials and features next-generation interactive technology. Blue and grey leather dominates the interior. The interior is finished with carbon-colour wood inlays, brushed aluminum accents and ceramic materials. Ambient lighting conveys an upscale aura that is complemented by the ultra-modern Tanzanite glow of the touch-screen displays.

These touch-pad screens and projected readouts take the place of most traditional gauges and serve as the audio and climate system controls – a design feature that helps open up the interior for greater passenger space.

Hybrid engine
Power comes from a new hybrid propulsion composed of a turbocharged 1.0L three-cylinder gasoline engine teamed up with an electric assist technology, engine start-stop function, brake energy regeneration and a dry dual-clutch transmission.

According to the manufacturer, this combination of technologies should allow the small Cadillac to run with as little as 4,2 L/100km in the city and 3,6 L/100 km on the highway.

The Cadillac Urban Luxury Concept will be on display at the Los Angeles Auto Show from November 19 to 28.
