Maximum output ratings reveal 210 horsepower generated at 5,300 rpm and 221 pound-feet of torque dispatched at only 2,500 rpm. Before hitting the front wheels of my tester, the stout output flowed through a six-speed manual stick.

The punchy little mill, connected to six manually shifted gears, delivers a delightful "sporty" driving experience during which the engine pulls strongly while producing a dignified exhaust note. Look for 0-100kph in the 7.5-second range. Although gear ratios are on the tall side, the engine's abundant low-end torque complements the proportioning.

Granted I don't consider the 9-3's minimal torque-steer problematic, nevertheless it must be mentioned. Laying into the ponies when the pavement is rutted or uneven can produce some unwanted sideways pull. Temperance and a firm hand on the wheel mitigate this common front-wheel-drive affliction.

As much as I appreciated the 9-3's manual stick, I found it less precise feeling than something from BMW, Audi or Acura. It works just fine but not with the same degree of definition and polish as those named.

Nicely balanced ride and handling
When I see the words, "sport" and "sedan" coupled together, the words "hard ride," pass through my sieve-like mind. Saab's coupling has altered this prejudice. The 9-3 Sport Sedan tactfully blends these opposites in a manner that doesn't forsake one for the other.

The 9-3 is a very agile sedan. It treats its driver to secure, stable handling dynamics that make it a pleasure to toss about and predictable when pushed in the corners. No, it doesn't sear the pavement in a BMW sort of way yet it deserves full marks for staying well planted and composed; and it does so without dishing-up an unpleasant ride.

The 9-3 is fitted with ventilated, antilock disc brakes all around. The binders pinch strongly through a pedal the responds with immediacy. Brake actuation is progressive and predictable. Emergency stops do not upset the apple cart- the 9-3's chassis is unruffled by a hard stomp on the middle pedal.

This is a European mid-size sedan that's high-spirited but not as edgyor serious as some competitors in the sport sedan segment.
