Considering it is a truck, the Tundra is endowed with a smooth ride. Since most of my off-road experience has been behind the wheel of early Land Rovers and Land Cruisers, it seems almost car-like. Fortunately, despite its comfortable ride it delivers in spades off the beaten track. With a ground clearance of 10.4 inches (265mm) it walks over most rocks and debris that get in the way. That said, it does have a 128.3 inch (3260mm) wheelbase which could hang it up over big ugly monster ruts and backcountry boulders, but the high-strength steel frame construction with eight cross members will undoubtedly keep it all together.

Music lovers will find Toyota's exclusion of an anti-skip CD player frustrating. As smooth a ride as this truck has, pavement gaps and potholes skip the CD interrupting the otherwise excellent audio system. While I'm ranting, when you lay into the horn of this big rig it sounds like something out of an econobox. That's OK in a little car, but a 'get out of my way, I'm coming through' horn would be much more appropriate in a truck of this magnitude.

The Tundra, with its tough as nails, smooth as silk V8 engine, is a truck that the performance car enthusiast can enjoy too. While handling heavy jobs it can also haul the family in comfort. It seriously raises the bar in this hot category. Watch out Detroit!
