In its last year, 1995, the RX-7 lineup didn't change all that much, because

it was losing the attention of Mazda's North American division. Why? Sales were dismal. It seemed that not enough customers were willing to shell out close to $50K for a hardcore sports car, and therefore the automaker deleted the model after the 1995 model year in North America, while continuing it on until 2001 in other markets that better suited its sporting image (with 265 to 280 horsepower in Japanese trim). For this reason the Touring model was dropped despite its initial popularity, but the Popular Equipment Package remained, costing less and delivering what most buyers wanted. Also, Mazda gave buyers more of an opportunity to build their cars a la carte, picking and choosing which options where to be included. For this reason, pay close attention when purchasing a 1995 model, as few were exactly the same. You won't find a 1995 with a red leather interior mind you, as the color was deleted this year. The previously mentioned R-2 performance package remained, however, now delivering razor-edge handling via a firmer suspension and Z-rated tires, while offering dual oil coolers,

rear spoiler, and a lowered front air dam. Oh yes, I almost forgot that the car's standard air conditioning unit was switched to CFC-free refrigerant, which makes the less common 1995 model cars easier to live with if the air conditioning system ever goes on the fritz.

One thing that is more common than not, no matter the model year, is metallic silver paint. While the world tends to gravitate to silver a disproportionate three point three times out of ten as it is, it seems that RX-7 customers found the tone more enamoring than usual. This, of course, makes pre-owned examples appear in even better shape than if black, dark blue, dark green, or even bright red, all colors which were available but nevertheless easily marked by errant rocks or, heaven forbid, keys.
