The tiny Lupo 3L TDI was the answer to a challenge to create a vehicle that could travel 100 km on only 3 litres of fuel. The Lupo, now called the Fox, is Volkswagen most basic vehicle. The heart of the Lupo is a 1.2L, three-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine. With the combination of direct injection and a variable blade geometry turbo, horsepower is rated at 61 and torque, at 103 lb/ft. The transmission is a 5-speed sequential with an automatic mode. The braking system consists of front discs and rear drums. The suspension is independent up front and semi-independent at the rear.

Most of the car's body panels and interior components are made from aluminium. Driving the Lupo is a decent affair. Although gutsy and reasonably refined, the 3-pot does not make the lightweight Lupo very quick. The transmission, which is in fact derived from Volkswagen DSG, is somewhat slow to react but the driver can adapt to the shift pattern with certain ease. The ride is fairly comfortable as are the seats. The cabin is quite well appointed with a high level of features as well as attention to detail.

Transport Canada's testing has confirmed that the Lupo is as frugal as Volkswagen says it is. It does consume 3L of fuel per 100 km and if driven with restraint, the average can be lowered by a further ½ litre of diesel.
