The first vehicle on our list is the smart forfour. This is the larger 4-door brother of the fortwo. It is powered by a 1.5L turbocharged 3-cylinder engine that runs on diesel. It develops 94 hp and 155 lb/ft of torque. The transmission is the optional 6-speed sequential with an automatic mode. In Europe, the basic transmission is a 5-speed manual. Unlike the smart fortwo, the engine is up front and drives the front wheels. It features the same Tridion safety cell as the fortwo, which guarantees the safety of its occupants. Other standard safety features include 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS and brake force distribution, stability control and 4 air bags.

The forfour is very stable on the highway. The one we tested had optional 16" wheels and tires and handled very well. The diesel engine is incredibly torquey and can very easily keep up with just about any regular sub-compact and compact car. The whole of the forfour makes genuine sense for our market. It can comfortably sit 4 passengers, it has a trunk and is unbelievably economical. Its interior is well appointed and quite comfortable. Sadly, DaimlerChrysler, the group that owns smart, is thinking of pulling the plug on the forfour due to slow sales in Europe. The forfour's fuel consumption is rated at 6.3 L city and 4.1 L over a distance of 100 km.
